Language policy

Background for developing a Language Policy at the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering

Aarhus University’s goal to be a leading internationally oriented university, as well as globalisation in general, means that researchers, teachers, and students have become much more mobile, and AU hosts more international researchers, teachers, and students than ever before.

Research and development take place in the context of networks that cross national boundaries, and close collaboration with international partners has thus become a condition for recruiting talent and for achieving a high level of quality and competitiveness in all of the university’s activities.

This requires a strategic assessment of how to communicate at AU, including how communication is practised at the individual departments.

Language policy at the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering

In accordance with AU's vision of being a leading and internationally oriented university, we will work towards a multilingual dynamic work-environment at the Department. The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering complies with AU’s Staff Policy on fostering a good work-environment through decency and inclusion. In this connection, the Department commits to communicating in both Danish and English with its staff and students:

  • Danish employees must be able to communicate in English, when necessary, in daily activities. In this connection, English courses are offered to Danish employees.

  • International employees are encouraged to familiarise themselves with Danish. In this connection, Danish courses are offered to international employees.

  • Employees, who do not speak Danish, must have the opportunity to communicate with the management and the administration in English, and to participate in the department's many functions and activities on equal terms with Danish employees.

  • Meetings at the Department are held in English in all cases where the group of participants may include non-Danish speaking employees.

  • The Department seeks that all official documents produced in relation to its bodies (such as committee minutes) are formulated in English to make sure that all parties who may be interested in the content can access it.

  • Outgoing written communication from the management and the secretariat will be in English in cases where the group of recipients may include non-Danish speaking employees. However, there may be instances where information, which is forwarded from other original senders, may be written in Danish.

The Department strives to provide a framework for a work-environment in which employees through unity and great mutual respect overcome linguistic challenges, while the international exchange of knowledge remains a primary focus in the daily work.
